Diwali is the one week of the year when your home WiFi gets properly tested. Relatives arrive with phones that connect automatically, video calls go out to family who could not travel, photos and reels upload all evening, and the TV is streaming in the background through all of it. A connection that handles a normal Tuesday can feel very different with fifteen extra devices on it.
Most of it can be sorted in twenty minutes, before anyone arrives. None of the steps below require buying anything.
Why WiFi struggles during festival gatherings
Two separate things happen at once, and they have different fixes.
- More devices sharing the same airtime. Your router talks to one device at a time, very quickly. Add twenty phones and each one waits fractionally longer. Most are idle, so this matters less than people assume.
- More genuinely heavy use at the same moment. Two video calls, a 4K film and several people uploading photos is real simultaneous demand. This is the part that actually consumes capacity.
Knowing which one you are facing saves you from fixing the wrong thing.
Do these before the guests arrive
1. Move the router out into the open
The single most effective change, and it is free. Take it out of the cupboard or TV cabinet, lift it off the floor, and keep it away from the microwave, cordless phones and large metal objects. Central and elevated beats tucked away in a corner every time.
2. Set up a guest network if your router supports it
Most dual-band routers allow a separate guest SSID. It saves you reading out your main password repeatedly, keeps visiting devices away from anything you have shared on your home network, and makes it easy to switch off afterwards.
3. Put the important things on 5 GHz
If your router broadcasts both bands, connect the devices that matter most — the TV doing the streaming, the laptop making the video call — to the 5 GHz band if they are reasonably close to the router. Leave distant phones on 2.4 GHz, which travels further through walls.
4. Check for anything already pending
A large cloud backup, a console downloading a game update, or a phone syncing a year of photos will happily consume everything available. Pause big downloads during the evening and let them run overnight instead.
5. Test it honestly, beside the router
Run a speed test standing next to the router, then run the same test where everyone will actually be sitting. If the first number is healthy and the second is poor, the issue is coverage in that room, and no plan change will help.
During the evening
- Protect the one thing that matters. If a video call to family abroad is the priority, keep 4K streaming off while it runs. Dropping the TV to HD frees up roughly 15 Mbps on its own.
- Restart only if something is genuinely stuck. A restart is a reasonable first move when the connection has frozen. It is not something to do repeatedly through the evening — each restart means a few minutes offline for everyone.
- Use mobile data for one or two heavy uploaders. If several people are uploading videos at once, moving one of them off WiFi briefly takes real pressure off.
When it is not the WiFi
If a device sitting right next to the router is also slow, the problem is upstream of your WiFi — the connection itself rather than the signal around your home. Likewise, if everything is fine during the day and only collapses at peak evening hours, you may be on a shared connection that congests when the whole area is online. A dedicated fibre-to-the-home line behaves the same at 9pm as it does at 9am.

If your plan genuinely is the limit
If the house has simply outgrown its connection — several people streaming in 4K, working from home and gaming at once — then more headroom is the honest answer. Digital Fiber plans run from 60 Mbps up to 300 Mbps on unlimited fibre with no FUP, and you can compare them on the home WiFi plans page or get a recommendation from the Plan Finder.
